Charu Kaushic, PhD, is the Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-Institute of Infection and Immunity and Full Tenured Professor in the Department of Medicine in McMaster University. She leads an interdisciplinary research program in women’s reproductive health with a focus in susceptibility and immune responses to sexually transmitted viruses, HIV-1 and HSV-2. She leads nationally and internationally, making decisions for CIHR strategic investments in the area of infection and immunity. In her current leadership role, her personal passion is to work with young women to encourage them to make careers in STEM fields and increase women and under-represented communities in leadership roles.
March 10, 2022–Dr. Charu Kaushic joins us for the third seminar in the 2022 WISDOM EDI Series. In this seminar, Dr. Kaushic highlights the concrete ways in which CIHR promotes Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion by creating–and funding–opportunities for these underrepresented groups. She discussed the compounding hurdles faced by women, racialized communities, LGBTQ, and differently-abled people, giving specific examples in gaps in research.
On key point of reflection during this presentation was the re-evaluation of metrics defining “excellence in research” as traditional metrics can be barriers for underrepresented groups.
